Does life appear to be on a roll? Is one event happening after the other? In what direction are the events taking you, towards evolvement or devolvement? Or are things proceeding really slowly, so as to rub in the friction? If you are confronted with these or related questions, then your mind is trying to understand the speed and direction of Karma.
When does Karma in any direction pick up speed? This can happen for example, when a major fruit of Karma is due and intermediary factors need to be cleared to get to that fruit, be it reward or punishment. The implications of this are quite interesting. This would mean that an oppressor who continues to flaunt opulence is pretty much near getting his/her due of atonement, and is currently in the process of rapidly burning out the last reserves of good Karma which are keeping this person from getting punishment. Likewise, it would also mean that one who has performed penance and continues to struggle is on the best path to be rewarded for his/her efforts, currently burning off the left-over bits of difficult Karma which are keeping this person from reward. With this basic understanding, one can define the direction of Karma as positive or negative, positive as in leading one towards the fruits of penance and negative as in taking the guilty towards the claws of atonement. [Karma’s direction can also be defined as leading towards evolvement (positive) or devolvement (negative). This is to be differentiated from the above definition.]
The soul knows its due, and tries from within to attract those circumstances which gets it its due, irrespective of the person’s behaviour on the physical dimension. Swami Sambodhananda says that when one has eaten a lot of chillies (performed penance), one knows from within that one needs something to pacify the chillies (i.e. one needs the fruit of penance), and when one has eaten a lot of sweetmeats (usurped the good Karma of others by performing cruel deeds), one wants (from within and without) to change the taste in the mouth to salty or sour (atonement).
Before judging the Vedic Astrology horoscope, just as the Astrologer ascertains / defines the Desh-Kaal-Paatra Matrix, so should the speed and direction of the native’s Karma be delineated as a further defining tool to judge the horoscope with. The pitch of the horoscope (spiritual / materialistic) along with the Dasha scheme and planetary lay-out can give an idea about the direction of Karma. The intensity (nature, speed) and interaction of planets and correlation to transit (nature, speed) can give an idea about the speed of Karma. These indicators can be further punctuated by Raja Yogas, Dhana Yogas, beneficience, malificience and many other Jyotish factors. Apart from this, the Astrologer can get an idea about the speed of Karma by taking a brief history of the consulter, which is anyway required to determine the Desh-Kaal-Paatra parameters. The Desh-Kaal-Paatra Matrix itself gives an indication about the speed and direction of Karma. The country of birth and the sphere of life’s environment along with the times one is born into are related to the speed of Karma going to be spent. If a soul has come to evolve, certain countries are preferred birth-stations. If a soul has come to splurge earnings and then to start afresh with karmic earning in some future birth, certain other countries are preferred birth-stations [of course one must have active karmic strands to connect to within these countries]. In other words, the Astrologer can get an idea about these two indicators from the horoscope and history of the consulter and can incorporate these indicators into the Desh-Kala-Paatra Matrix.
Interest in Paara Vidya topics is a prime indicator of a karmic direction pointing towards evolvement, whose speed can be judged by the speed of accumulating and assimilating spiritual knowledge. The dissemination of accumulated and assimilated spiritual knowledge furthers the direction of this karmic vector.
Similarly, interest in evil is a prime indicator of a karmic direction pointing towards devolvement, whose speed can be judged by the speed with which one picks up evil habits and friends. The performance of evil acts furthers the direction of this karmic vector.
Meditation, according to Lord Krishna the highest possible Karma that mankind can perform, shoots one’s personal vibration into the cosmos like a laser. During meditation, one connects to Cosmic Consciousness on the highest level. Cosmic Consciousness, which has now received and read one’s personal vibration, sends it back with a correction code, and one’s system modifies the speed and direction of its Karma as per karmic requirement and the constraints of body, mind, soul and destiny. With such optimal fine-tuning, a person can live life to the fullest.
The sheer act of judgement of the speed and direction of Karma makes one start measuring everything and everone in the currency of Karma. Such an outlook is a precursor for detachment, because the soul starts remaining steady under any kind of circumstance, not interpreting an event as an event but as an outcome resulting from the interplay of the strands of active Karma. Thus, knowledge of these two karmic characteristics has the power to take one from atonement to evolvement, detachment and Self-realization.
